A Post-It Note with What's your request stamped on it
Two post-it notes one that reads "thank you for a fab night", the other "you smell x"
post it note with "you're going to end up with way too many requests tonight aren't you?" written on it

Club 30-80 is an occasional dance night for the over 30s who “don’t go clubbing but still like to shimmy”. It is run by Rosie and Roger. The night is centred round requests for songs from anyone who comes along. This means the playlist isn’t dominated by one particular genre of music – it’s pretty much anything from Bill Haley to Baccara, the Buzzcocks to BeyoncĂ©.

It all started after Rosie came back from a night out in Lancaster. She had been out with friends at disco for the over 30s where the audince chose what was played. She had a brilliant time. When she came back to Newcastle, she roped her friend Roger in and that was that.

The first club night was in June 2016 and more than sixty dancers hit the floor! By the second Club 30 to 80 night in September Roger was DJ-ing – for the first time: “I had an unexpectedly brilliant time, not only compiling the backbone playlist beforehand but on the night too, moving songs around, responding to the audience, adding in last minute requests. It was really good fun.  When you talk to people about the idea of Club 30 to 80, they immediately come up with tunes that you just “have to play“, it’s quite infectious. I chatted with one guy who was really taken with the idea, particularly that the diversity of the music was key to our notion of a successful night. At the end, he came to me with a sheet of A4 paper he had filled with over 50 suggestions for next time, it really made me chuckle”.

“Last time, of the 75 tunes that were played from 8 till midnight, 44 were direct requests from the audience. Most requests come in through the Facebook group and also via email. It’s easier for to compile the playlist this way and to source songs we don’t have. We played music from every decade from the 40s to the present day. There was some disco, some motown, some glam rock, some reggae, some swing, some punk, some pop, some new wave, some goth and some easy listening classics. All of them really good songs to dance to.”
