Earlier this month I played a session on The Thursday Night Show featuring songs and pieces of music that feature xylophones, glockenspiels or marimbas.
I’ve been a tab obsessed by this kind of percussion instrument since I was a little boy. There was a children’s television programme called Music Time in the early 1970s which I used to watch with my mum and I loved. Over a number of programmes the presenters would take a piece of classical music and broke it down into its composite parts, showcasing each instrument in the piece.
The programme I remember most vividly is the isolated glockenspiel part from Coppelia by Léo Delibes. I was transfixed by it and thought it sounded like stars which, for a four year old is quite poetic (precocious) really.
Once I decided to put the playlist together it seemed like I had become hypersensitised to the sound of Glockenspiels and Xylophones. I heard them everywhere! I hope you like my little compilation.
This playlist was originally broadcast on Thurs 3 August 2023 on www.TheThursdayNightShow.com and you can listen to DJ 30 80 packs a Glock(enspiel) via Rewind on the Thursday Night Show’s website.
