The next theme for Club 30-80’s Stay Home Special on February 20 2021 will be steam powered.
On February 21, 1804 (217 years ago), the first ever self-propelling steam locomotive made its first ever journey of 9 3⁄4 miles (15.7 km), at the Pen-y-Darren Ironworks in Wales. The locomotive was designed by Cornish engineer Richard Trevithick.
It successfully carried 11.24 tons of coal, five wagons and 70 men, in 4 hours and 5 minutes. The average speed was 2.4 mph (3.9 km/h).
