I completely forgot to post about our party last night ahead of it happening but the themes was gold. On 5 February 1869 the largest alluvial gold nugget was discovered in Victoria, Australia. The nugget was known as Welcome Stranger. As usual, the theme is loose so we took the nugget as a starting point and ran with it. We were looking for songs that celebrated gold and other metals, mining and prospecting, and strangers and we weren’t disappointed.
Ironically, on February 7, 1863 one of the earliest versions of the Periodic Table called the Law of Octaves was published by British chemist John Newlands and also considered by some to be National Periodic Table Day. Out little golden party sat right between the two!
I had about 8 hours of music on my long list and managed to whittle it down to 3 and a bit on the night. We dug our way through a significant amount of the periodic table taking in gold, silver, copper, lead and tin. Our diamonds and pearls offset our rubies perfectly as they shone, dazzled and glittered down down deep deeper and down into the dark of the evening. I was very lucky to have had such fabulous requests and consider them to be all “mine”!
