Fermented Pop! What’s that when it’s at home?*

Fermented Pop! What’s that when it’s at home?*

On the 6th August 2020 I will be playing my first ever slot on The Thursday Night Show as me, well, DJ 30 80 that is.

I was thinking about the type of music I would like to play, and as usual, I couldn’t limit myself to one particular genre but did select a couple of songs that I definitely did want to play. I then got to thinking about what it was that about those songs that made me feel that I HAD TO include them in my set.

It eventually struck me that although the songs were of an unmistakable pop sensibility, their lyrics were dealing with some quite profound and difficult topics that were at odds with this frivolous top coat. I liked this idea and have ended up with a joyful playlist filled with songs about lack of self worth, domestic abuse, abuse of power, political resistance, rebellion, loss, insecurity, failure, existential angst, detachment, inequality, despair, resignation, alienation and depression!

That is where the notion of the term “Fermented Pop” came from on my flyer. I have now subtitled it “bright songs about ailenation and despair“. I wanted to hint that there was more than just the shiny veneer.

The depth can be alarming like suddenly finding yourself out of your depth swimming in the sea or that the Dandelion & Burdock you have been drinking is actually alcoholic and you are too pissed to drive home. I think it is an interesting area to explore further over the coming months too and I have noticed that once you are aware of “fermented pop“, you can’t help but see (hear) it everwhere!

Now I just have to whittle my playlist down to an hour!

* songs that sound jolly but are really sad
